Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
A small church with 12th century foundations, just west of the prehistoric earthwork known as the mount on which the original castle was built by the Normans in c1070. The church and surrounding lands were originally in Marlborough and only acquired the name "Preshute"- meaning "Priest's Cell"- in 1186 when the main town acquired its own church.1
The church consists of nave, chancel and south aisle. The cylindrical Norman piers and capitals in the south arcade have been retained. 15th century west tower. Much of the rest was restored by T H Wyatt in 1854.2
St Georges contains a single window by Percy Bacon and Brothers of c1916. It is a simple two light window with tracery depicting Virtues, Justice and Mercy. Above Justice a scroll; "God is a righteous judge" and over Mercy, "With the Lord there is Mercy". The figure of a haloed Mercy holds a child swaddled in a blanket. Justices holds a sword and scales. Above each, two sun bursts and a crown, and in the tracery, wrapped around lilies a scroll with the words; "The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God". The figures stand on pedestals inscribed with their names, and are set in white diamond quarries and a simple border.
The window is dedicated to the memories of John Compton Hussey (d. 27th Nov 1901) and his wife, Susannah (d. 13th oct 1888), and also their daughters, Elizabeth (d. 26th Oct 1899) and Arabella Kate (d. 14th June 1916). The window is unsigned. Click on the image to start a slide show.
