Stained Glass of Percy Bacon
Posted 25 August 2023
There is a single Percy Bacon window in St Andrew's in the north aisle. It is a fine example of the quality of the painting work which was the hallmark of the studio, and was probably by Percy Bacon himself. The window, of three lights, depicts the standing figures of Sarah, the Blessed Virgin mary and Child, and St Elizabeth. The painting is exquisite, the skin tones almost porcelain-like in their delicate texturing. This is typical Bacon. The BVM stands central, and slightly higher than the other figures. She hold the Holy Infant with characteristic outstretched arms.
The subject matter was doubtless informed by the name of the dedicatee, Sarah Elizabeth Williams. The window was given by her husband and daughter. The church guide suggests that this window was installed by Powell & Sons. However, this is not mentioned in Powell's Order Books so cannot be verified.
The window is unsigned.
