South Chancel 1: Christ the King and Angels: 1926

Posted 15 November 2022

A three-light window with Christ the King at its centre. His halo is extra large and emlazoned with the words, "King of Kings". He holds a book with a (revised) quote from Revelation 14:13. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, that they may rest from their labours. Beneath Christ, the dedication reads:

"RIP. To the Glory of God and in memory of our much loved parents, Vaughan and Ellen Davies, & also our Aunt, Anne Mashiter all there resting in this churchyard.
Dedicated [obscured] 19 1926".

Although the donors are not specifically named, it is almost certain that they were Percy Bacon's wife, Clara (Claire) and her siblings, four of whom were alive in 1926. Clara's parents were Vaughan Palmer Davies (1826-1914) and Ellen Anglica-née Robinson-(1833-1913). Clara's mother's sister, Elizabeth Annie (née Robinson) married William Mashiter in 1886 and died in 1905. William and Elizabeth lived at The Elms on the High Street in Romford, the house in which Percy and Clara Bacon lived from 1906 after their marriage, and up until 1910. William Mashiter is remembered in a window by the Bacon Studios at St Edward the Confessor, Romford, installed in 1898.1

This page will be updated once images of the third Bacon Studios windows in St John's is obtained.

Posted 05 September 2024

A three-light window with Christ the Consoler at its centre, flanked by the standing figures of the Blessed Virgin, and St John the Evangelist, all within elaborate achitectonic niches. Above the two outer figures scrolls read:

BVM: "Herein is our love made perfect" - 1 John 4:17.
St John: "Let brotherly love continue" - Hebrews 13:2.

Beneath the figure of Christ the words; "Come unto me" on a scroll held by two kneeling angels.

In the tracery lights angels hold scrolls with the words, "Faith", "Purity", and "Love". The window dedication reads;

"Erected to the Glory of God by Emily Anne and Amy Clara Pemberton-Barnes in affectionate memory of their brother and sister".

The date of insertion of this window is uncertain as Amy Clara Pemberton-Barnes died in 1924.

The window is unsigned.
