Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 03 September 2023.
Of the five lights in this window, only the central three are filled with stained glass, the perpendicular tracery likewise. The window represents the sacrement of baptism, with scenes depicting the baptism of Christ, baptism in the church and the ceremony to dedicate the church. In the main three lights are three standing figures:
Left: Blessed Virgin mary; "Hail Mary, full of grace".
Centre: Christ blessing.
Right: St John the Baptist
The three figures seem to be enveloped in (or even standing within) a fruiting vine tree, which shields the scenes below. In the predella are three figurative scenes:
Left: Dedication of the church. A procession led by choir boys, one of whom is holding a processional cross, is followed by tonsured monks, the lead monk wearing spectacles and reading from the Bible. At the rear, crozier in hand, a mitred bishop.
Centre: Baptism of Jesus by St John the Baptist in the River Jordan.
Right: Scene of baptism in the church. A mother holds her child over the font and towards a tonsured priest who raises his hand in blessing at the very moment of the child's entry into the church.
In the small tracery lights standing figures of Uriel & Michael, and two Jewish high priests, one of whom holds a model of The Arc and the other a pilgrim's staff. In the top tracery openings cherubim heads poke through a plethora of strangely coloured blue wings, with flanking Alpha and Omega symbols in garter.
The window is dedicated at the base in a text font uncharacteristic of Percy Bacon's work::
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF GEORGE | SPENCER LEIGH BENNETT 20 YEARS VICAR OF THIS | PARISH OBIT 11TH DEC 1906. MAY HE REST IN PEACE |
The window is unsigned. It was designed by the architect John Edward Dixon-Spain (d. 1955) who was born in the town.2.
