Stained Glass of Percy Bacon
Posted 15 July 2023.
By the end of 1930, the firm of Percy Bacon Limited appears to have been in terminal decline if not virtually defunct. It went into liquidation in January 1933. Only three known works were produced in 1931, and this window in St Peter & St Paul's in one of them. The window depicts the Virgin Enthroned, with the infant Christ on her lap, attended left and right by kneeling angels, all set in plain diamond quarries with simple flower motifs in yellow stain. Borders are made of blue and red quarries interspersed with lighter ones having crowns and floral motifs. The angels have their characteristic Bacon style souring red wings. Above the angels scrolls read; "Unto us a child is born" and "unto us a son is given". The subject matter is unusual for Percy Bacon, there being only one other representation of the Virgin Enthroned.
The dedication is to three siblings, Lucy (D. 1924), Theophilus (D. 1928) and Arthur Jeyes (D. 1915), and Arthur's daughter, Mary (D. 1924).1 It reads:
The window is signed bottom right, "PERCY BACON LONDON".
