Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
St Michael and All Saints church's foundations are clearly Norman having retained the original round piers with scalloped capitals in the north arcade. Much of the rest was remodelled or rebuilt piecemeal in the 19th century. The tower, which replaced a wooden belfry, was not added until 1831, the south aisle by G E Street in 1857.1 The north and south arcade arches are embellished with biblical texts and the north aisle east wall is decorated with wall paintings by Prof. Thomas Frederick Mason Sheard in 1901 (restored by Ruth Bubb, Conservor of Paintings in 2003).2
There is a single Percy Bacon window of two lights of 1898 in the north aisle which depicts the standing figures of Archangel Michael and Angel Gabriel. Both stand on chequered, ornate pedestals with wings in shades of blue and green stretching up into the narrow lights, topped by elaborate canopies. Michael dressed in armour holds a sword in his right hand and the scales of justice in his left. Gabriel holds a lily symbolic of his appearance before the Blessed Virgin at the annunciation. The window is dedicated to the memories of the Rev. Cadwallader Coker MA and his wife Emily. The Rev Coker died of diphtheria on 21 April 1894, just a week after burying his wife.3 The window is unsigned.
