Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 21 February 2023
There is a single Percy Bacon & Brothers window in St Mary's, the east. Of three lights with tracery, it depicts in a conventional manner; in the centre; the Supreme Sacrifice of Jesus on the cross flanked by the Blessed Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist in their customary positions, and kneeling at the foot of the cross, St Mary Magdalene. In the tracery demi-angels hold shields with arma christi. Above the BVM a scroll reads; "Ecce Filius tuus" (Behold thy Son) and above John; "Ecce Mater tua" (Behold thy mother), the words uttered by Jesus in John 19:26-27. The same cartoon for the BVM is used by Bacon at St John's, Rushford, Norfolk, except in that case the scroll above her reads, "Ecce Mater Tua". Below Mary Magdalene are the words from John 19:30, "Consunimatum est" (it is finished).
The dedication panel at the base reads;
The window is signed, PERCY BACON BROS. 11 NEWMAN ST. LONDON W..
