Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 21 July 2024.
This three light window in the north aisle was installed in 1921 as a memorial to those of the 1st and 2nd Batallions, The Fifth Fusiliers who perished in World War One. The window depicts:
Left: Joshua
Centre: Captain of the Lord's Host, representing Victory.
Right: David as a young man.
The design is similar to that used in the war memorial window at St Pega's, Peakirk, Cambridgeshire. The dedication reads:
"To the Glory of God and to the Memory of all Officers, Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates who have ever served with the 1st or 2nd Battalions of the Fifth Fusiliers who gave their lives in the Great War 4th Aug 1914 to 11 November 1918".
In the predella (left and right lights) are representations of cap badges. However, these are not the badges of the Northumberland Fusiliers, but those of the Lancashire Regiment. It is not clear whether this was a mistake on the part of Percy Bacon, or done deliberately. The central panel depicts angels holding a shield with a representation of George slaying the dragon and the Northumberland Fusilier's motto, "Quo fata vocant" (Whither the Fates Call).
