Stained Glass of Percy Bacon

The Corpus of Percy Bacon, 1892 - 1935

" Yet my attempt is not of presumption to teache, (I myself having most need to be taught,) but only to the intent that gentlemen that seeke to knowe all good thinges, and woulde have an entrie into this, may not find here a thing expedient but rather a poor help thereto."
Leigh's Accedence of Armorie, London, 1576.

Stained glass window by Percy Bacon and Brothers, St Michaels & All Angels Church, Mickleham, Surrey; 1893

An early work of 1893, St Michael's, Mickleham, Surrey

This is a website devoted to the life and work of stained glass artist and sculptor, Percy Charles Haydon Bacon. Its aim is to record and publish as many as possible of the output of his companies; Percy Bacon & Brothers (1892-1917) and Percy Bacon Limited (1917-1932). In addition, and from time to time, essays on stained glass by other makers and pre-reformation glass, as well as subjects of interest will be published. Click on the Essays link above to view.

Some stained glass artists and firms are well documented, most notably the output of Charles Kempe. Kempe is famous enough to have his own Trust, set up to secure his firm's work and legacy, and that Trust published a detailed Corpus of Kempe's work in 2000, compiled from the Commission Registers of the Kempe Studios housed in the V&A. Other artists and firms do not fare so well, and remain somewhat obscure, though their work is no less impressive, and output as prolific as the Kempe Studio. Focussing on one individual or one firm is difficult. There is so much great work to see.

The work of Percy Bacon is not widely known, and unlike the Kempe Studios or James Powell's Order Books, there are (until now) no known consolidated records of Percy Bacon's output which started in 1892 and ended as late as 1933. This project is an attempt to rectify that, though by necessity it is likely to be a work in progress for some considerable time, as information is fragmentary at best. In what has been a long drawn out task, so far I have been able to bring together from multiple sources around 700 or so individual installations, be they stained glass windows, church decoration or furnishings. This list includes lost work. The works for the UK and abroad (excluding Repulblic of Ireland) are now published in The Corpus of Bacon which can be downloaded using the link above.
