Stained Glass of Percy Bacon Limited
Posted 26 April 2026.
There is a single Percy Bacon work in St Michael's, a three-light window with simple tracery in the south chancel. It being a war memorial it represents the standing figures of St Michael with shield and flaming sword, the Blessed Virgin and Child, and St. George dressed in armour and holding a lance and shield emblazoned with the eponymous cross. Above Michael and George a scroll reads, "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life" (Revelation 2:10). Beneath the Virgin another scroll reads; "Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
In the tracery cherubs hold a mandorla emblazoned with a golden chalice and cross.
In the predella beneath St Michael are the badge of the 8th South Wales Borderers, and beneath St George a coat of arms, as yet unidentified, with the motto "Deo Farvente" (God willing).
On a brass plate beneath the window, the dedication reads:
The window is unsigned.
