Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers

This large, splendid church with its c12 chancel and crossing tower would not be out of place in a much larger town. The clerestoried nave is c15. The east window, comprised of three tall, narrow lancets, was installed as part of the 1876 restoration,1 but the chancel still retains the original c12 windows, albeit much restored. Internally they are deeply splayed, and simple. Externally they have oversized round heads with beautifully carved hood moulds and flanking nook shafts with scalloped capitals.
The east window represents the crucifixion, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and St John in their usual positions. Above Mary and John scrolls bear the words:
Mary: "All generations shall call me blessed".
John: "The disciple whom Jesus loved".
At the base of the cross a scroll bears the words from the Nicene Creed:
"For us men and for our salvation".
The window dedication reads:
The Reverend Wilson seems to have been a rather colourful character whose sermons were said to have been, "full of spontaneity, fire and energy".2 He had lost his right hand early in life and therefore sported a steel hook as a substitute.
The window was unveiled at a dedication ceremony on 30th May 1913.3
The window is unsigned.
