The Builder reported the installation and decoration of the reredos in Holy Trinity thus:

"REREDOS, HOLY TRINITY, MICKLEGATE, YORK.— A reredos was unveiled on Easter Day at this church. It is of pine, carved in the Perpendicular style. The carving was executed by Mr. Milburn, of York, from the designs of Mr. Hodgson Fowler, and was decorated by Messrs. Percy Bacon & Brothers." 1

The large central panel depicts the Supper at Emmaus, while the six niched panels, three either side depict the standing figures of saintly bishops and an abbess; from left to right: St Cuthbert and St Aidan of Lindisfarne with St Hilda of Whitby; St Paulinus, St Wilfred and St John of Beverley, Bishops of York. It would seem that the painting work was done some time after the initial decoration reported in The Builder article. On the 1st june 1894, the York Herald reported that, "It is intended to have a picture representing "The Supper at Emmaus" in the centre panel and single figures in each of tbe side panels when funds will allow it; at present the general painting and decorating only is completed." 2
