Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 4th January 2022.
Leigh is a somewhat retiring village and lies approximately 5 miles south of Sherborne. St Andrew's Church is largely 15th century and was extensively renovated in 1889.
The one Bacon window (north aisle east) installed in 1908, is of three lights with tracery, and is on the theme of the Resurrection and Appearance to Mary Magdalene. The style of the painting a significant departure from Bacon's standard but shows many similarities with the windows in the north aisle in nearby Lady St Mary, Wareham. This might indicate the same hand at work. The scene which occupies all three of the lights is unencumbered by any of the normal flamboyant canopies or, indeed, any form of framing devices. In a similar fashion to the Wareham windows, large areas of dark blue sky in large rectilinear tiles occupy the upper third of the lights making the whole a little dark. The window is a memorial to Jane Ffooks and Reginald Ffooks, given by Thos. Ffooks, the husband and father.1
