Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 13 August 2025.
There is a single Percy Bacon window in St Matthews. At the time of writing, its exact location has not been confirmed. Robert Eberhard's site attributes the work to the Bacon Studios, and states that the window was brought from the redundant St Savior's Church in Alexandra Park, North London which was demolished in 1994.1 Other windows originally in St Saviour's ended up at Ellerton Priory Church, Yorkshire, and some are lodged with the London Stained Glass Depository.
The window, a single lancet, is most definitely from the studio of Percy Bacon. It was part of a series of windows for St Saviour's, Alexandra Park, installed in circa 1905 - 1908. This window was installed in 1905.2 The window's subject is Christ in Majesty, seated in front of the usual elaborate niche with wide columns in white glass. Above him on a scroll are words from the Te Deum, "Tu Rex Gloriae Christe". At the base two angels hold a scroll with the words, "Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus".
The window is unsigned.
