Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 21 November 2024.
The windows in the north aisle are all single lancets, and all except NA1 in pairs. The glass in these windows depicts events in the life of St Paul, and all but the pair at NA4 which is by Ward and Hughes are by Percy Bacon and Brothers. The Bacon Studios windows were executed between 1901 and 1905. The windows opposite in the south aisle depict events in the life of St Peter and are by Clayton and Bell.1 The north aisle windows follow the same layout, with a depiction of an event in the life of St Paul from Acts and 2 Timothy in the centre, and a kneeling angel below holding a scroll with words from the gospels, so it is likely that the complete scheme had been designed from the start, even though installed over a number of years, and not all executed by Percy Bacon. The Ward and Hughes pair were installed in 1921 and depict (left): St Paul kneeling before Ananias, and (right): Barnabas introducing Paul to the apostles.
