Corpus of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 09 August 2025.
During its first ten years or so in business Percy Bacon & Brothers carried out a significant amount of general church decoration. At Holy Trinity the dome above the sanctuary represents Christ in Majesty surrounded by flying angels and putti, and two kneeling saints; the the right, St John the Baptist, and to the left, the Blessed Virgin. Floating around Christ are more putti, while above Him is a representation of the Holy Spirit.
On the wall below the dome are representations of three Old Testament prophets, a crucifixion scene, and three saints. These wer carried out by Charles Edgar Buckeridge about the same time as the Bacon Studios work.
A Palladian style church was built in the 1750s following the collapse of the original medieval church. Enlargement was completed in 1888. This comprised extending the nave towards the east, adding an additional 150 seats, and the addition of a chancel and side chapels, choir, and organ chamber.
