The remodelling of the church between 1905 and 1907 is said to have cost £15,000, an enormous sum, which accounting for inflation would amount to over £2 million at a 2022 valuation.1
The whole scheme for the church glazing, of which the Lady (or Rolle) Chapel formed a small part was arrived at in discussion with George Fellowes-Prynne,2 the chapel being built onto the east of the north transept as part of the 1907 renovation. All but one of the six Bacon Studios windows were installed as part of this original scheme. The windows, each of two-lights are set high in the polygonal wall at the east side of the chapel., and represent the "Incarnation of our Lord", a favourite Bacon subject. Using the plan (right) as reference, the windows' subjects are as follows:
1. | Annunciation to the Virgin (Rolle memorial plaque below)3 |
2. | The Visitation of Mary to St Elizabeth |
3. | Adoration of the Magi |
4. | Nativity |
5. | Adoration of the Shepherds |
6. | Presentation in the Temple: BVM and Simeon |
7. | Internal window opening onto the chancel - plain quarries |
